Coquette and Potoooooooo!!! Jan 11th

28 02 2011

I spent the morning running around GRR for awhile, and then headed over to have lunch at the Canopy Tower.

After a wonderful lunch there I was heading downstairs and someone called out ‘Rufous Crested Coquette!!’, which induced me to RUN down the stairs to the flowering bushes down by the entrance. I was thrilled to see my first Rufous Crested Coquette, even if it was ‘just’ a female. This was the first time this species had ever been seen at Canopy Tower, which made it an even more ‘special’ bird for all of us who got to see it.

As I drove down the hill, I saw Carlos Bethancourt unloading his group by the highway, and he flagged me down and asked if I had shots of the Great Potoo. I immediately parked and took some shots of the bird as Carlos pointed it out…and then drove back to Gamboa, picked up my 800mm lens and went back for more!! Potoos are one wild species, the Great Potoo is about as large as a Great Horned Owl, but their camo is sooooooooo good that the best way to find one is to hear one calling in the pre-dawn hours as they settle on to a roost.  Carlos (and Raul) are both due a huge THANK YOU!! for giving me the opportunity to photograph two incredible species in a single day.
