Happy New Year! January 1, 2011

25 02 2011

Went on a very nice walk on the grounds of the Gamboa Rainforest Resort this morning with the Colino family. They’re a very nice family, with two very sharp young children (pre-teen) who came over to stay at Guido’s place a day or two ago.

It was overcast this morning, with a heavy fog initially. We headed down towards the Chagres River and I finally got a shot of a Capybara. They’re pretty common around the resort, typically seen very early in the morning or at last light. During the day they find a brushy area to bed down in so they aren’t often seen on land in the light.

As we got further in the ‘up river’ direction we started seeing Southern Lapwings feeding in the grass. Getting to the furthest grassy area toward the Teleferico we found a group and the fog started to clear enough to get some nice photographs. I have to thank the Colino family for being so tolerant of my ‘mission’. I stayed on the Southern Lapwings for a good 45 minutes and they waited with utmost tolerence (and quiet!) for me to get my shots.  The ‘Southern’ in Southern Lapwing is attributable to the fact that this is the northern extent of this large plover’s range–it’s resident all the way down to Tierra Del Fuego)

After that, we walked on down to the Teleferico, and back. During the rest of the walk I tried to make sure that I was more of a guide than a photographer. We saw a wide variety of birds and then headed back to Guido’s where we had the pleasant surprise of the Geoffroy’s Tamarin troop coming by for some bananas.

Nice day, and it was a treat to hang around with the Colino’s. They were good company and it was fun to see the kids having such a great time exploring the wildlife.
