More gifts under the trees down here! Dec 26th

22 02 2011

Took a chill day today….slept in, did some reading, did some laundry and went through all my gear cleaning and checking. It was overcast, and drizzly, and I just didn’t feel like slogging again today.

The good thing about staying at Guido Berguido’s place in Gamboa is that you really don’t have to go anywhere to get some nice shots. Even the overcast can be a boon, as it provides a softer light that is just perfect for some of the species seen here. I focused on the lil jewels of the backyard inventory today, honeycreepers in all their glory.

The Red-Legged Honeycreeper is a bird I first saw in an aviary down in Florida. I remember being amazed at it and thinking I’d never be so lucky as to see one in the wild, much less get any pictures of wild ones. Central America can sure be an eyeopener as to the possibilities. Here’s a male and a female…glorious birds.

The Blue Dacnis is another beauty. This is a female. She’s more subtle than the male, but is nonetheless one of my favorite birds. Just beautiful!

Oh, and let’s not forget the Shining Honeycreeper–They really do shine!

Lastly, a Green Honeycreeper. This is the male, which is actually more of a blue-green honeycreeper. The female is a brilliant lime green but I wasn’t able to get an images of her today (Staying up would have cut in to my layin-around time, and some days thats important to me….like today!)
