El Dia de Pelicula (Sounds much better than ‘day off’ to my ‘English as a first language’ ears) Nov 28th

28 11 2010

This is a video of the Rufous Vented Ground Cuckoo, feeding at an Army Ant Swarm at the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center, Pipeline Road, Gamboa, Panama. I must apologize that it’s completely unprocessed–I’ll clean it up a bit when I get a chance.

I actually took a day off today–the first day since my arrival in Panama on Nov 3rd that I didn’t pick up the camera. Instead, I took Jesus (who takes care of the casa I’m staying at) and his wife and 4 year old son the see Las Aventuras de Sammy–a kid cartoon flick about a tortuga marina (marine turtle) and treated them to a nice lunch at Albrook Mall. They’ve been very good to me this past month, forgiving my horrible spanish and taking great care of me. Jesus Jr. was PSYCHED and had a ball. Mucho rewarding.

Tomorrow my good Amigo Chris Mayne arrives, so I’ll hit the trails early and then shower up and head to the airport to pick him up. We’ll stay here for a couple of days, then we’re heading up to El Valle de Anton to get some variety for about 4 days, and then we’ll hit Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe and back here in Gamboa for the rest of Chris’ 10 day trip.

After that, I head to the Darien highlands with Jesus. We drive down, then take horses the rest of the way in. Should be quite an adventure. (I wonder if they have cable? ‘-)

Then it’s back here for Christmas, and some more road trips to various other hotspots. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this is absolutely a blast!

Hasta Pronto!

Oh, and here’s a video of the Pheasant Cuckoo, Feeding and Vocalizing–(attention, Ken Allaire, this is the video which matches the sound recording you posted to xeno-canto) Please excuse the focus hunting that’s going on, I shot this with a 300mm f2.8 in very dark forest, almost wide open, so my depth of field was a very few inches and the light was so dim I had to focus manually as the bird moved.

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this is absolutely a blast!” John, this is such a treat, living your adventure vicariously. I’d give anything to be able to “sink in” to the local landscape like you’re doing [were doing] and experience it at my leisure, with no pressure to pack as much into a week as possible. I enjoy your style too. Thanks, and I look forward to a few more days’ good reading!
